TripAdvisor 5 Star Review, "We went rock climbing and rappelling with TrekNetwork today and we couldn't have asked for a better experience.  In the area the last couple of days, we have done three ziplining tours, a segway tour, a quick tour of a nature preserve and some hiking. While it has all been wonderful, this has been my FAVORITE activity so far. The physical challenge of the rock climbing was satisfying and the view of the waterfall going down was breathtaking!! I HIGHLY recommend.

HOCKING HILLS ROCK CLIMBING DESCRIPTION

The climbing method we use is called top roping.  This means that climber starts at ground level and climbs up.  While you climb, the guide has you "on belay" meaning, there's a rope connected to your harness that runs up through a carabiner and back down into the guide's hands.  As you climb the guide takes in slack.  You'll climb real Ohio rocks with our professional guides that teach climbing technique and belay using the top roping method.  You'll start out climbing 20' to 40' with most visitors topping out and feeling like they're accomplished something they never expected possible.

Rock Climbing:

There are lots of beginner routes that start out similar to climbing a ladder and become more challenging as your skills grow.  Beginner and intermediate routes are side by side so groups with varied levels of strength or skill can stay together and enjoy the day.  In rock climbing terms, the scale or rating system for level of difficulty in the Hocking Hills starts at 5.4 / 5.5 and reaches 5.12.  For reference, a 5.4 is like climbing a ladder with easy holds.  5.5 & 5.6 are slightly more difficult with easy holds but more difficult spacing,  Intermediate climbers will find 5.7 & 5.8 sections to have slightly harder holds and more difficult spacing.

Advanced climbers will find 5.10 to 5.12 routes with more difficult holds and further spacing requiring even greater strength, knowledge, experience, flexibility and technique.  Our climbing treks start at ~ 2.5 hours.  For the beginner, the Hocking State Forest Rappelling and Climbing area offers a convenient location and an excellent opportunity to be introduced to top rope climbing.  Our expert guides work closely with you to understand your skill level and desired challenge.  They'll design a climbing experience that you'll remember forever.  Beginners usually make about 4 climbs that can reach up to 40'.  Beginners start at a 5.4 level of difficulty and often reach 5.6 or 5.7.  Athletic first timers may reach a 5.8 or 5.9 level of difficulty.

For advanced climbers, you'll be surprised by the challenge and skill development opportunity that Hocking HIlls Black Hand sandstone presents.  Our local climbing area is convenient and surrounded by lots of other fun things to do.  You'll love finding your own way to complete the most challenging routes.  Holds can be softer in some places and the footwork is more challenging than West Virginia or Kentucky.  The wide variety of erosion styles presents great opportunities for learning hold selection.  One unique feature you'll find is honeycombing.  It's interesting to look at and presents some pretty cool challenges that can help further your climbing experience.

The highest climbs are in the 80' range although most local experts spend their time in the 30'-40' range practicing advanced techniques.  All climbs are top rope.  No one is forced to do anything that they're not comfortable with.  Anyone with a passion to take on challenges and new heights is welcome.  You don't need to be an athlete or an expert to climb and descend these great rocks!  At the end of the day you'll be surprised by this hidden gem and look forward to returning time and again.

Regardless of whether you've spent some time on an indoor climbing wall or never tried anything like this, we'll match you with a great guide, provide all the gear and instruction needed and help you learn proper rock climbing or rappelling technique.  Call 740.777.2579 to book your trek today.
