GUIDELINES FOR KIDS
There's no specific age limit and kids are welcome. Based on our experience kids as young as 6 years old do quite well rock climbing and kids as young as 10 or 11 do well rappelling. The climbing method we use is "Top Roping" which means that climbers start at ground level and climb up. While you climb, the guide has you "on belay" meaning, there's a rope connected to your harness that runs up through a carabiner and back down into the guide's hands. As you climb the guide takes in slack.
Each child must have a parent present. For kids and adults, all equipment is provided including rock climbing shoes, adjustable harnesses, helmet, ropes, rappel devices and gloves (for rappelling). Wear comfortable clothing, nothing loose fitting. Proper footwear is closed-toed shoes suitable for hiking. Yoga pants are fine just not short shorts, Long hair needs to be tied back. Participant's, maximum weight is 250 lbs with a waist size 40" or less.Complete details on where to meet and what at to bring and wear are provided when you make your reservation.

Additional info for seasoned rock climbers:Rock Climbing: There are many challenging climbs for beginner, intermediate and advanced climbers. Basic climbs start at 5.4 / 5.5 level of difficulty and range to 5.11. In climbing terms, a 5.4 is like climbing a ladder with easy holds. 5.5 & 5.6 are slightly more difficult with easy holds but more difficult spacing, Intermediate climbers will find 5.7 & 5.8 sections with slightly harder holds and more difficult spacing. The biggest difference is that technique becomes more important and the moves become more sequential / unpredictable.
Advanced climbers will find 5.9 to 5.11 routes with more difficult holds and further spacing requiring even greater strength, knowledge, experience, flexibility and technique. Our climbing treks start at 2.5 hours. For the beginner, the Hocking State Forest Rappelling and Climbing area offers a convenient location and an excellent opportunity to be introduced to top rope climbing. Our expert guides work closely with you to understand your skill level and desired challenge. They'll design a climbing experience that you'll remember forever. Beginners usually make about 4 climbs that can reach up to 40'. Beginners start at a 5.4 level of difficulty and often reach 5.6 or 5.7. Athletic first timers may reach a 5.8 or 5.9 level of difficulty.
For advanced climbers, you'll be surprised by the challenge and skill development opportunity that Hocking HIlls Black Hand sandstone presents. Our local climbing area is convenient and surrounded by lots of other fun things to do. You'll love finding your own way to complete the most challenging routes. One unique feature you'll find is honeycombing. It's interesting to look at and presents some pretty cool challenges that can help further your climbing experience.
